Detection of rain/no rain condition on the ground based on radar observations
نویسندگان
چکیده
Detection of rain/no-rain condition on the ground is an important for application of radar rainfall algorithms. A radial basis function (RBF) neural network-based scheme for rain/no-rain determination on the ground using vertical profiles of radar data is described in this paper. Evaluation based on WSR-88D radar over central Florida indicates that rain/no-rain condition can be inferred fairly accurately.

Polarimetric radar observations during an orographic rain event
An intense orographic precipitation event on 5 January 2013 is analyzed using a polarimetric C-band radar situated north of the Alps. The radar is operated at the meteorological observatory Hohenpeißenberg (MHP, 1006 m a.s.l. – above sea level) of the German Meteorological Service (DWD). The event lasted about 1.5 days and in total 44 mm precipitation was measured at Hohenpeißenberg. Detailed h...
متن کاملObservations of Wintertime U.S. West Coast Precipitating Systems with W-Band Satellite Radar and Other Spaceborne Instruments
The potential of CloudSat W-band radar for observing wintertime storms affecting the West Coast of North America is evaluated. Storms having high hydrological impact often result from landfalls of ‘‘atmospheric rivers’’ (‘‘ARs’’), which are the narrow elongated regions of water vapor transport from the tropics. CloudSat measurements are used for retrievals of rain rate R and cloud ice water pat...
متن کاملStatistical and neural classifiers in estimating rain rate from weather radar measurements
Weather radars are used to measure the electromagnetic radiation backscattered by cloud raindrops. Clouds that backscatter more electromagnetic radiation consist of larger droplets of rain and therefore they produce more rain. The idea is to estimate rain rate by using weather radar as an alternative to rain-gauges measuring rainfall on the ground. In an experiment during two days in June and A...
متن کاملSensitivity of Distributed Hydrologic Simulations to Ground and Satellite Based Rainfall Products
In this study, seven precipitation products (rain gauges, NEXRAD MPE, PERSIANN 0.25 degree, PERSIANN CCS-3hr, PERSIANN CCS-1hr, TRMM 3B42V7, and CMORPH) were used to force a physically-based distributed hydrologic model. The model was driven by these products to simulate the hydrologic response of a 1232 km watershed in the Guadalupe River basin, Texas. Storm events in 2007 were used to analyze...
متن کاملPrecipitation and microphysical processes observed by three polarimetric X-band radars and ground-based instrumentation during HOPE
This study presents a first analysis of precipitation and related microphysical processes observed by three polarimetric X-band Doppler radars (BoXPol, JuXPol and KiXPol) in conjunction with a ground-based network of disdrometers, rain gauges and vertically pointing micro rain radars (MRRs) during the High Definition Clouds and Precipitation for advancing Climate Prediction (HD(CP)2) Observatio...
